Maine General: Launching Two Unique Charitable Gifts
Harold Alfond was an iconic philanthropist in the state of Maine – his name graces scores of academic, recreational and medical buildings across the state. Warner Communications enjoyed promoting his gift to MaineGeneral Health, creating the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care to provide the same standard of medical excellence to patients across the Kennebec Valley that he himself received. The opening of the eco-friendly LEED-standard healthcare facility garnered weeks of local media coverage, and we also earned the attention of strategic press from the Wall Street Journal’s “Gift of the Week” to Modern Healthcare.
The success of the project led Mr. Alfond to again turn to MaineGeneral Health as a trusted partner, as he piloted a fitting capstone to a lifetime of generosity: The Harold Alfond College Challenge. This is a first-in-the-nation grant, presenting $500 into a 529 College Fund to every newborn in Maine. Our assignment was to announce the program to local and national media.
Working in tandem with MaineGeneral, whose patients would be the first eligible enrollees, we coordinated with several other key constituencies including the Finance Authority of Maine to announce the program through a news conference. The launch announcement blanketed the state’s media for days, from page one news articles to editorials lauding the program; reached national audiences with articles in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and the Associated Press, and received coverage in philanthropy, parenting and education publications.
